Under a completely different set of circumstances than ever before, the Havre High boys and girls track teams took to the road Friday for the Glendive Invitational track meet.

On a weekend when the Ponies usually stay home and rest, Havre High decided to strike out and prepare against a host of good Class A teams for this week's Central A Divisional track meet.

Friday afternoon saw the Havre High boys score a season-low 18 points against non-Class AA competition. The 18 points scored by the Ponies was eighth out of eight teams in Glendive. Glendive won the meet with 108 points.

The HHS girls fared much better in Glendive, scoring 64 points to earn a third-place finish. Eastern A powerhouse Sidney finished first with 111.5 points and Central A frontrunner Lewistown was second with 100.33 points. Miles City and Laurel finished just behind Havre with 64 and 60 points, respectively.

Individually, the Havre High girls got another outstanding day from junior Lena Suek, who captured both the discus and javelin titles in Glendive. Suek threw the discus 131-04, which was nearly 14 feet better than her closest competitor. Her mark of 120-02 in the javelin was also strong enough to earn a second gold medal.

Casea Pollington was the only other winner for the HHS girls on Friday afternoon, as she won her sixth high jump gold medal of the season. Pollington captured the event with a leap of 5-2. Pollington's jumping partner Carmen Neuens finished fourth in the long jump and took second in a rare appearance in the 100 meters. Kelsey West finished fifth in the 100.

Sophomore Hannah Wells showed continued improvement in her first varsity season for HHS by once again placing in both hurdle events. Wells finished third in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Meredith Hanson also helped Havre's cause with a strong third-place showing in the 1600-meter race, and Havre's short relay team earned a second-place finish.

While the HHS girls appear poised for a run at the Central A divisional title this week, the Havre High boys warmup for the postseason didn't exactly go as the Ponies had planned.

Most of Havre's 18 points on Saturday were scored by Cody McLean, who won the pole vault with a final leap of 13-0.

The Ponies got a fifth-place finish from Derek Verploegen in the 100 meters and a sixth-place finish by Michael Hickman in the long jump. Verploegen finished the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.84, while Hickman jumped 18-11 in the long jump. The only other points Havre scored on the day were by way of its short relay team, which finished fourth.

Both Havre High track teams will now head to Belgrade for the 2006 Central A Divisional track meet which gets under way Friday afternoon.
