Get your motor running and head
down the highway to Liberty County
Hot Rod Days today and Saturday.
A Sock Hop, poker run and car
show and “Art in the Park” are
planned.
Events begin this evening in
Chester with the Liberty County
Chamber of Commerce’s Cruise Night
Poker Run event organizer Tina Wood
said today. Old cars, new cars, pickups
and motorcycles are welcome to
enter the events. The motto, Wood
said, is “If it goes, it shows.” The
poker run begins tonight at 5:15 p.m.,
the Sock Hop begins at 6 p.m., the hot
rods that participated in the poker run
will be on display for viewing at 8
p.m. and the car show and “Art in the
Park” are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday.
Participants of the poker run are
scheduled to leave at 5:15 p.m. Wood
said the participants arrive at K-Lines
in Rudyard at 5:45 p.m. The drivers
then head to the Inverness Bar, the
Joplin Bar and return to Chester
about 8 p.m. for the Sock Hop.
One poker card is picked during
check-in, then one card at each of the
three cruise stops, with the final card
dealt at the Liberty Village Arts
Center in Chester, where the Sock Hop
is being held, Wood said. A bonus card
will be awarded to Cruise Night participants
for either pre-registering or
signing up at early registration at the
Vets. She said that another bonus card
will be available for pre-registering
for the Joplin Car Show on Cruise
Night.
Poker winners will receive $100 for
1st, and $50 for 2nd, she said.
Prizes from the poker run for Best
and Worst Paint Job, Oldest Vehicle,
Most Unique Vehicle and Best Dressed
Biker will be given out at the Sock
Hop, which is “sure to be an affair of
fun, music and food,” Wood said.
There will also be a prize for the best
1950’s-dressed male and female. She
said there will be plenty of refreshment
savailable with the “You keep
the glass” bottomless root beer floats.
The Lion’s food wagon will also be at
the Sock Hop with burgers and dogs
starting at 5pm, she said. The crowd
will be dancing in the streets with a
DJ spinning golden oldies from 6-10
p.m. Wood said there would be a variety
of contests at the Sock Hop as
well. A limbo, hula-hoop and bubbleblowing
contest will be available for
those wishing to participate, she said.
Car show registration is from 9 to
11 a.m. Saturday at the Wood
Enterprises building. Wood said the
entry fee is $5 for those registering in
advance at Wood Enterprises in Joplin
or the Liberty County Chamber office.
Entry fee is $10 the day of the event,
she said.
There will be food and refreshments
available all day Saturday. The
Joplin Bar booth will be the location
for the beer garden and sign-up for
the 1 p.m. horseshoe tournament,
Wood said.
Local musicians and groups from
along the Hi-Line will provide the
entertainment throughout the day, she
said. Kids can have fun, too, she said.
There will be a craft corner and water
activities Saturday for kids, so make
sure to bring a swimming suit.
At the “Art in the Park” show a
variety of arts and crafts vendors and
home demonstrators will have items
for sale. A quilt show will be held at
Joplin Community Hall as well this
year.
“Come view the wide range of classic
and antique autos,” Wood said.
“Hope to see you for the biggest event
in Liberty County each year. This
bash will be a blast for the whole family,”
she added.
