2006 Great Northern Fair

Fair opens with young cowboys and cowgirls on center stage

The fair is upon us, and things got off to an exciting start Wednesday night as some young cowboys and cowgirls showed their rodeo skills in the Great Northern Fair Kids’ Rodeo. In the 14-18 year old division, Layne and Lynsey Waid each put on good performances, as Layne took home first place in breakaway roping and Lynsey finished second in barrel racing to firstplace winner Morgan Darlington. Layne and Lynsey also had success working together with a first-place finish in team roping. Whitney Kline grabbed first place in pole bending, and Chelsea Brown took second in pole bending and third in barrel racing. The 9-13 year old division saw Meagan Raty, Merle Young and Steven Boyce team up to take home first place in team penning. Raty also enjoyed success out on her own, taking first place in steer riding. Young took home first in breakaway roping and also managed a third-place finish in goat tying. Kiana Simonson won both the pole bending and steer riding competitions, with Kassy Brough and Scott Schmitt coming in second and third place, respectively, in pole bending and Jerod Coffee coming in second place in steer riding.

Simonson also won the barrel racing competition, finishing in front of Tenley Keller, who came in second, and Shay Tatsey and Lacey Waid, who came in third and fourth place, respectively. Tylynn Rettig grabbed first place in goat tying, with Neya Bischoff finishing second. John Bell also came in second place in breakaway roping. In the 4-8 year old division, Katie Smith managed a first-place finish in goat ribbon tying ahead of second-place finisher Casey Young as well as Loni Waid and Dylan Darlington, who tied for third place. Cleo Cole finished first in barrel racing, with Casey Young coming in second and Loni Waid in third. Also, in the flag race, Dylan Darlington took home first place ahead of Larissa Getten. In the 4-6 year old division, Jazz Schroeder grabbed first place in sheep riding in front of Jonah Roy Ereaux and Grace Gibson, who came in second and third, respectively. And finally, in the arena boot race, Anthony Smith took home the title, ahead of Loni Waid, who nabbed second, and third-place finisher Conner Bender and fourth-place finisher Skylee Dirden.
