The holiday break finally came to an end this week and high school girls basketball returned to the hardwood across the Hi-Line.
On Friday night, the Harlem Wildcats suffered a close loss, which has become a trend this season, losing to Shelby, 56-49.
Harlem trailed by as many as 14 points during the contest, but managed to make a game of it in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats were led in the loss by Amy Stiffarm's game-high 16 points. Danielle Dirden added 12 points.
In Class C action Friday night, the Chester/J-I Hawks remained undefeated on the season after defeating Power, 69-33.
The Hawks raced out to a 22-4 first-quarter lead en route to the easy win. Mary DeVries scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Hawks. Hannah Pimley and Keyla Briese added 13 points apiece.
In 9C action, Hays-Lodge Pole edged Turner 50-44 in Turner. The Thunderbirds used an 11-4 run in the third quarter to break open a one-point game.
Hays-Lodge Pole got 18 points from Suzie Kirkaldie and 15 points from Sheena Shambo. The Tornadoes were paced by Cheryl Cowan's 18 points.
Friday night also saw the Big Sandy Pioneers trounce the Chinook Sugarbeeters, 68-48, in Big Sandy.
The first half did Chinook in as Big Sandy outscored the Beeters 19-8 in the first eight minutes and 18-8 in the second stanza.
The Pioneers were led by Kaci Herron's 18 points. Shalayna Pearson added 16 points. Chinook got 11 points from Dawn Kellam.
The upset of the night came in Rocky Boy, where the North Star Knights drubbed the host Morning Stars, 62-43.
North Star used a 16-8 second-quarter run to build a comfortable halftime lead. The Morning Stars crept back into the game in the third period, but North Star exploded for 20 points in the final eight minutes to put the game away.
Tasha Dyrland led four Knights in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Jodi Norman and Maia Aageson scored 13 points each, and Courtney Wendland added 10. Rocky Boy was paced by Shaneen Raining Bird's 14 points.
In nonconference action Friday night, the Box Elder Bears fell to Sunburst, 63-57.
Saturday night the Harlem Wildcats opened District 2B play with a loss at home to rival Wolf Point. The Wolves thumped Harlem, 63-40.
Bouncing back from losses was the order of the night in District 9C play on Saturday.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters rebounded from a loss to Big Sandy on Friday night by knocking off Hays-Lodge Pole, 60-47, in Chinook.
The Beeters came back from a 15-5 first-quarter deficit, and ran away from the T-Birds by outscoring them 43-20 in the second half.
Chinook (2-5) got 12 points each from Dawn Kellam, Cheyenne Hamilton and Crystal Roseberry. Kassie Dugan added 11 points. The T-Birds(5-4) were led by Sheena Shambo's game-high 20 points.
Rocky Boy also atoned from a loss on Friday night by surviving a scare from Box Elder in Box Elder.
The Morning Stars had to come from behind and outscore the Bears 29-24 in the final stanza in order to earn a 66-65 win.
Rocky Boy (6-2) got 21 points from Shaneen Raining Bird, and Tori Belcourt added 19 points. The Bears (1-7) were led by Tasha Parisian's 20 points.
The Big Sandy Pioneers were the only 9C team to escape the first weekend of 2006 unbeaten, with a win in Turner, 59-56.
The Pioneers (7-1) now sit alone atop the 9C standings heading into the heart of their schedule. With two close losses on the weekend, the Tornadoes fell to 2-5.
