Saturday was a beautiful spring afternoon at the Havre Middle School track for the Cal Wearley track meet. The Big Sandy boys and Chester/J-I girls rode some great individual performances to victory in the first track meet of the 2006 season.

The Big Sandy boys racked up 132 points to capture first-place honors in the boys meet. Denton finished in second place with 90 points and the Havre High White team ended up in third with 75 points.

On the girls side, Chester/J-I squeaked out a six-point win, as the talented Hawks notched 106 points, edging out Big Sandy for first-place. The Havre High Blue team finished in third place with 83 points and the Havre white team came in fourth with 62 points.

“I thought that for the first meet of the year, our kids came out and competed very well,” C/J-I co-head coach Dustin Keltner said. “We had some good young kids that stepped up and performed well for us. We also had some very good individual performances. I was really pleased with the effort of our kids today.”

Kyle Danreuther sparked Big Sandy to victory with a spectacular showing on Saturday. Danreuther won the long jump, the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-hurdles. The Pioneers also got victories from Justin Willis in the 400-meter dash, Karl Osterman in the 200-meter dash, Darin Ray in the 800-meter run, as well as wins in the 1600- and the 400-meter relays.

The Havre Blue Ponies also got some solid individual performances in the meet as Robert Brooks led the way for the Havre White team with first-place finishes in the 1600- and 3200-meter races. Derek Verploegen, also of the HHS White team, with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash. The Havre White team also finished second in both the 1600-meter relay and the 400-meter relay.

“We had some good results for the first track meet of the year,” HHS head coach Mark West said. “We had a lot of good performances and we had some good young kids who stepped up and were able to give us some good depth. “Robert Brooks had an outstanding day,” West added. “He won both the 3200 and the 1600 and his times were very good. It just showed how hard he has been working in the offseason and it was really nice to see that. It was also really good to see Derek Verploegen win the 100. It was a good first meet. Now we just need to get into a little bit better track shape.”

Other solid individual performances included Grayson Winsor of the Havre White team winning the shot put, Cody Donoven of North Star winning the javelin and Branden Melby of North Star winning the triple jump.

“It was a good first meet for us and the kids performed very well,” North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. “We had some very good individual performances by Cody Donoven, Branden Melby and Alex Chvilicek.

“Karl Danreuther of Big Sandy also had a spectacular day,” Campbell added. “And overall it was good meet. The weather was very good and there were some great individual performances.”

In the girls meet, Brianne Wolfe of Chester/J-I had a standout performance, earning first-place honors in both the 800-meter run and the 400-meter dash, sparking the Hawks to victory. C/J-I also grabbed first-place finishes in both the 400-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay.

“We had a really balanced team effort today,” Keltner said. “Brianne really had a spectacular day for us. We had some really good performances and we have a lot of things to build upon.”

As good as the Hawks were on Saturday, Kourtney Danreuther of Big Sandy was even better. She grabbed first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 100 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the long jump to lead the Big Sandy girls to a second-place finish in the meet.

“Kourtney Danreuther of Big Sandy had an outstanding performance,” Campbell said. “She was able to win five events as a freshman. She is an amazing athlete.”

Lena Suek of Havre also had quite a day, notching first-place finishes in all three of the events she took part in. Suek won the discus, javelin and the shot put, leading the HHS Blue team to a third-place finish.

Meredith Hanson of Havre earned a first-place finish in the 3200-meter run for the Havre White team. The Havre Blue team also earned second- and fourth-place finishes in the 400-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay, respectively. The Havre white team finished third in both relays as well for the Ponies.

“We did really well in the short relays, especially because we split up our teams into two equal squads.” West said. “Lena Suek had a really good day winning three events. She had an especially good day in the discus, throwing over 129 feet, which is very good. It was also really nice to see Meredith Hanson win the 3200. We have a really balanced team and we just need to get in better shape and we need to get a little bit more depth.”

Other solid individual performances included Echo Thurston of Denton winning the 1600-meter run, Crystal Roseberry of Chinook capturing the triple jump, and Desirae O'Neal of Big Sandy winning the high jump. The Havre High track team will compete again next Saturday at the Lions Invitational in Havre.
