It was disappointing day for the Havre High track team as both the boys and girls were soundly defeated in a dual against Class AA Great Falls High.
The Havre High boys were overwhelmingly defeated in the dual meet by the score of 104-46, while the HHS girls did much better, but still came up short by the score of 84-67 Tuesday afternoon at the Havre Middle School Track.
The Havre girls were able to take home first-place honors in both of the 400-meter and 1600-meter relays. The sweep in the relays gave the Ponies a chance of winning the dual, but in the end they just did not stack up in the individual events.
The Ponies did have some very good individual performances, however, led by Meredith Hanson, who won both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. Junior Lena Suek also had another outstanding day for Havre, winning the discus and finishing second in the javelin.
Rounding out the top individual performances for the Ponies were Mandi Nystrom, who earned a victory in the 400-meter dash, Kelsey West, who won the 200-meter dash and Carmen Neuens, who won the long jump.
Other Ponies who placed in events and scored points for Havre were Hannah Wells in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, Tricia Samson in the 300 hurdles, Amanda Hedstrom in the 3200 meters and Jaleesa Barthel in the 800 meters.
The Bison were led by Kiri Winkler, who won the shot put and placed second in the discus. The Bison also got wins from Frankie Brady in the 110 hurdles, Brittney Myers in the 100-meter dash, Lead Whirry in the 300 hurdles and Lindsey Klotz in the 800 meters. There weren't a lot of bright spots for the HHS boys team, with the Bison taking first place in 12 out of the 16 events contested. However, the Ponies did get victories from Derek Verploegen in the 400-meter dash, Jack Teske in the triple jump and Robert Brooks in the 3200 meters. Havre also won the 1600-meter relay after the Blue Pony team was disqualified in the 400-meter relay.
Riley Reardon led the way for the Bison, taking home first-place honors in the 300 hurdles, the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run. Darby Reardon finished first in the discus and the shot put.
Other Blue Ponies who had good individual performances were Jason Mudrow, who earned second place in the 100 hurdles, third in the high jump and third in the 300 hurdles. Paul Jensen finished third in both the shot put and the discus. Andy Keim was second in the 800-meter run, Cody McLean was second in the pole vault, Michael Hickman was second in the triple jump, Kyle Rummel was third in the 200-meter dash, Marcus Campbell finished third in the 3200-meter run, and rounding things out for the Ponies was Tristin Welter finishing third in the 400-meter dash.
The Havre High track teams will split up this weekend. The HHS boys will travel to Butte on Saturday for the Dahlberg Invitational and the Blue Pony girls will be in Great Falls for the Optimist Invitational.
