The expectations were not very high for the Havre High track teams heading into their dual meet against the CMR Rustlers in Great Falls on Tuesday. However, the young Blue Pony teams turned a few heads with a performance that certainly exceeded all expectations.
Although neither team was able to win the dual both the HHS boys and girls teams performed very well against two of the top track teams in all of Class AA, with the girl's falling just 11 points shy of a victory losing, 78-67 and the boys losing 91-54.
The Blue Pony girls team was led by a number of standout performances highlighted by Carmen Neuens, who had a breakout afternoon by winning the high jump, the triple jump and the long jump. Neuens has been bothered by nagging injuries all season long and those injuries had been hindering her performance.
However, once Neuens got healthy, it was only a matter of time before she returned to top form and with three first-place finishes against a very good CMR team, she proved she is in peak condition.
Junior Lena Suek also had another outstanding day for the Ponies, finishing first in the discus and the javelin throw as well as finishing third in the shot put.
Other top individual performances included Kelsey West, who won the 200-meter dash and came in third in the 100-meter dash. Meredith Hanson won the 1600-meter run and finished second in the 3200-meter run. Sophomore Hannah Wells took first place in the 300 hurdles and Casea Pollington finished second in both the pole vault and the high jump. Havre also took first in the 400-meter relay.
The HHS boys team also had a number of solid performances on Tuesday, led by sophomore Kyle Finneman. Finneman took first in the 1600-meter run while teammate Robert Brooks came in first place in the 3200-meter run. Cody McLean captured the pole vault and finished third in the javelin, and Ryan Horne grabbed first-place honors in the long jump.
Kyle Rummel had a very good performance finishing third in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Jason Mudrow continued to perform well as a hurdler grabbing second-place finishes in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Derek Verploegen also had a very solid day for the Ponies finishing in second place in both the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.
The Ponies also had a number of young athletes step up and provide some much-needed depth by earning some crucial points. Such performances included Michael Hickman finishing third in the long jump, Grayson Windsor grabbing a third-place finish in the shot put, Jack Teske with a third-place finish in the triple jump and Paul Jensen finishing second in the discus. Robert The Boy also finished third in the discus for HHS.
The Ponies will continue their busy schedule on Thursday when they head to Malta for the Malta Invitational.
