With the end of the season in sight, the Havre High boys and girls track teams took the Lewistown Invitational track meet on Saturday as an opportunity to get themselves ready for the divisional track meet, which is not too far away.
Earlier in the season, at the Lions Invitational track meet in Havre, Lewistown stole the show away from the Ponies, and even though Havre was missing some of their stalwarts, the Ponies were hoping they could return the favor on Saturday.
But, just like last month in Havre, the Eagles soared to victory in both the boys and girls meets.
On the boy's side, the Eagles scored 88.6 points, 17.6 points ahead of Havre and Glasgow, which ended up in a tie for second with 71.2 points.
The girl's competition was not nearly as close with the Eagles posting a rather large victory after scoring 117 points. Class B Cascade came in second with 83 points and Havre finished a respectable third with 82 points..
“I thought that our kids competed pretty well under the circumstances,” HHS head coach Mark West said “We had a lot of kids go to other school events and we also had some kids miss out because of injuries, so we weren't as focused on our team scores as we usually are. We were more focused on the kids having good individual performances that will help them prepare for divisionals.”
Havre got some great individual performances from its sprinters on both the boy's and girl's side. Derek Verploegen won the 100-meter dash and finished third in the 400-meter dash. Kyle Finneman won the 200-meter dash and finished fifth in the 100-meter dash. And Kyle Rummel added a third-place finish for Havre in the 200-meter dash.
“I was really proud of how our sprinters came out and competed,” West said. “We have been hoping that they would kind of break out all year long and so it was nice to see all three of them do well.”
Kelsey West had quite a day for herself continuing the show of strength by Havre sprinters. West won both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Cammie West also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash and Mandy Nystrom finished fifth in the 200-meter dash.
“Kelsey really had a great day,” West said. “She has been so consistent all year long and she has kind of went under the radar a little bit this year. It was just really nice to see her come out against some good competition and run as well as she did.”
Evan Stokken of Lewistown had another impressive performance by winning both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles as well as finishing second in the pole vault. Havre's Cody McLean continued his dominance in the pole vault by winning the event with a final mark of 13-0 to Stokken's 12-6.
Other solid finishes for the boys team included Jason Mudrow who finished fifth in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Andy Keim finished second in the 800-meter race, and Jack Teske finished second in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump for the Ponies. Havre also won the boys 1600-meter relay.
“I thought that the boys did a nice job of competing hard and stepping up for some people who weren't able to compete,” West said. “Jack Teske has been coming on nicely and it was really good to see him perform the way he did at this point in the season.”
Evan Stokken wasn't the only Lewistown athlete to have an outstanding day as Emmy Bentley won the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run and the 3200-meter run as well.
For the Ponies, Lena Suek had another impressive day and with a discus throw of 139-4, which was a stadium record and gave Suek the best throw up to this point in the state of Montana. Besides her first-place finish in the discus, Suek also finished second in the javelin throw.
“Lena had a really great day,” West said. “For her to throw almost 140 feet with the discus is pretty amazing. She has just continued to work hard and that's why ever single week she does better than the week before.”
Other top performances for the Havre girls team include Casea Pollington getting first-place in the high jump and Carmen Neuens, who finished fourth in the high jump and third in the long jump. The win in the high jump was Pollington's fifth this season. Hannah Wells finished fourth in the 110 hurdles and Heather Sienkowski finished fifth in the discus throw for the Ponies.
“I thought our girls did well in Lewistown but we didn't do great as a team and our relay team struggled a little bit. But I think that all the kids that competed did a nice job,” West said. “It was a good chance for some young kids to get an opportunity and some of them took advantage. Right now, we are all just preparing for divisionals and this meet was just another part to that.”
The Ponies will be in action again next Friday in Glendive for the Glendive Invitational.
