A Whitefish man was critically injured early Tuesday while allegedly using fireworks to blow up mailboxes with a friend. Ian Reynolds, 18, and Charles How, 18, were setting off fireworks in mailboxes set in a heavy stone masonry structure when the accident occurred around 12:30 a.m, authorities said. Flying pieces of metal hit Reynolds, breaking his femur and pelvis and severing several arteries, authorities said. He was taken to the hospital in Kalispell. A sheriff’s deputy cited How and Reynolds with criminal mischief and minor in possession of alcohol. Owners of the mailboxes estimated damages at $5,000.
