He was born April 9, 1932, in Missoula and was the son of Virgil and Thora (Hoppie) Shandorf. Shan’s mother passed away when he was very young. He was raised by Virgil and Verna Shandorf and graduated from Helena High School in 1950. Shan enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served until his honorable discharge in 1954. He married Elsie Sweeney in 1956 and they later divorced. Shan married Patricia Steele in 1981. He worked as a railroad switchman, a deputy sheriff, and a custodial engineer. Shan also was an auto mechanic at Rod’s Alignment for many years. He was a member of the Eagles and he loved fishing and the outdoors. Shan enjoyed time with his family and friends. He was willing to help anyone and could fix anything. Shan was a jack of all trades and was loved by all. Shan was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Patricia; his son, Tim; and a grandson. He is survived by his children, Dan Shandorf and wife, Jana of Havre; Donna Huseby and husband, Brent of Hamilton, and Kim Butler and husband, Bob of Anaconda; five stepchildren, Mike Steele, Penny Steele, Roxanne (Carroll) Lewis, Barbara (Michael) Fitzpatrick and Dawn McLean; his sisters, Barbara Wynhoff, Janis (Rick) Morton and Kay Brown; his brother, Jerry (Mary) Shandorf; and his uncle and brother, Jerry (Pinky) Shandorf; and numerous grandchildren. The family suggests that memorials be made in Shan’s name to Relay for Life or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Daly-Leach Chapel.
