Fay “Mac” McDonald, 87, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at the Rocky Mountain Care Center in Helena of natural causes.
Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Friday with his funeral service 2 p.m. Friday at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel with Pastor Richard Rice officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Highland Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the V.F.W. Club immediately after the services at the graveside. Fay was born June 5, 1920, in Whitefish to Frank and Jennie (Hovd) McDonald. He was raised and educated in Whitefish graduating from high school. He entered into the U.S. Air Corps in January of 1942 and served during World War II as a pilot who flew in the India Burma Star and China Star campaigns. Fay was honorably discharged as a major in 1946. After his discharge from the military, Fay attended Cheney Washington College and graduated with his Bachelors in Education. In 1949, he went to work for the Great Northern Railroad and worked for them until he retired. He married Dorothy Dorn on Dec. 30, 1954. The couple made their home in Havre. They didn’t have any children but were very active in the community. Fay was a member of the Havre V.F.W., the American Legion and sang in the Barber Shop Quartet. He was also a member of the Hump Pilots Association, the Mason’s and the Shriners. In his younger years he was an Eagle Scout with Psalsms. Fay was an avid gardener and enjoyed needle working. He and Dorothy loved to travel and see different places. The world became a better place the day Fay was born. He touched many lives with his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, beautiful smile, his laughter and most of all his love of God, country, family and friends. He will be truly missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy in 1992; and one niece, Shirley Davis. Fay is survived by his two sisters, Clara Wihlborg of Helena and Ruth (Don) Dorn of Bemidji, Minn.; nieces and nephew; and numerous great nieces and nephews. In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made in Fay’s honor to the Shriners Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210-2472. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
