Phyllis Hutton died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at the Northern Montana Care Center with her family by her side.
Services will be held at 2 p. m. on Saturday at the Turner High School followed by burial in the Turner Cemetery. Phyllis was born on Aug. 2, 1924, in Dodge County in Minnesota, and graduated from Mantorville High School. After graduating from high school, Phyllis lived and worked in southern Minnesota, mainly in Rochester. While vacationing in Montana to visit her high school friend, Maxine Hutton, she met and married Hugh Hutton in 1950. After their marriage, they farmed north of Turner and later, after the children began school, they purchased and managed the Turner Hotel. In 1972 the hotel burned to the ground. They chose not to rebuild the hotel but continued to live in Turner until Hugh’s death in 1992. After that, Phyllis moved to Billings for a very short time and then moved to Havre to be close to her family. Phyllis was very active in the Turner community where she was a member of the Turner Christian Church, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 56 years; a member of the ODO Club; and was also proclaimed by some as an “Honorary Mayor” of Turner. After she moved to Havre, she became a member of the Fifth Avenue Christian Church where she thoroughly enjoyed listening to her favorite minister each Sunday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh, in 1992, as well as her parents Rowlie and Ruth Odell of Mantorville, Minn., and sister, Helen Rydberg of Duluth, Minn. She is survived by three sons and three daughters: Ken (Nancy) Myers of Pasco, Wash.; Becky (Steve Overlin) of University Park, Wash.; Margie (Terry Larson) of Kent, Wash.; Dan (Amy) of Turner; Rowlie (Suzette) of Havre; and Cathy (Dwayne Bond) of Des Moines, Wash.; 14 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-inlaw Esther Statelen of Chinook and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Turner American Legion Auxiliary, the Little Rockies Christian Camp, or an organization of your choice. Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook is in charge of the arrangements.
