Chancellor Alex Capdeville announced Monday he will recommend to the Board of Regents to hire Dr. Joe Callahan as interim provost and vice chancellor at Montana State University- Northern. Callahan will replace Dr. Cheri Jimeno who is leaving Northern to become the new campus executive officer for New Mexico State University- Alamogordo. Callahan will start his responsibilities in June. Callahan is currently a professor of education at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D. He has 17 years of university administrative experience, including chair, dean and vice president for academic affairs. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s in education from East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania and an education doctorate from the University of Montana in 1979. Callahan worked at MSU-Northern, formerly Northern Montana College, as a dean and associate dean from 1977-86. Callahan’s wife, Kim, is an audiologist. The couple have three grown sons: Joe, Mike and Ryan, all of Reno, Nev. “I am very pleased and honored to accept the interim position of provost at MSU-Northern,” Callahan said in a press release issued by the school. “On our recent visit, my wife, Kim, and I were very impressed with the changes and improvements to the campus and the wide array of academic programs Northern has to offer. I look forward to supporting MSU-N students in achieving their academic goals. I am anxious to learn the strengths of the faculty and the various responsibilities of the support staff. I eagerly anticipate working with chancellor Alex Capdeville and the entire MSU-Northern team.” “We are very fortunate to have a person of Dr. Callahan’s credentials and understanding of Northern to come back to Havre and assume this position,” Capdeville said. “I am very confident that Dr. Callahan will do an excellent job.”
