George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com The Havre Comets American Legion baseball team, who have struggled in league play at times this season, picked up a much-needed road win on Wednesday afternoon. The Comets were at Don Olson Field in Great Falls on Wednesday for a Northern District doubleheader with the Great Falls Stallions, and thanks to Josh Haas, the Comets took game one of the double-dip, 8-6. Haas was stellar on the mound for Havre, getting a complete-game win, and also going 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. The Comets belted out 12 hits and scored six of their eight runs in the first two innings. Havre scored four times in the first inning and tacked on two more in the second to lead 6-1. Despite surrendering 10 hits, that lead was enough for Haas, who went the distance for the Comets. Haas also got help from battery mate Shane Kemmer who went 3-for-4 at the dish with a triple and an RBI. Paul Jensen went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Dylan Patterson and Gavin Swietnicki also drove in runs for the Comets. The Comets also looked sharp in the nitecap, jumping out 6-4 lead by the fourth inning. But weather problems caused the game to be suspended, and the remainder of the game will be made at up at a date that has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, the Havre Northstars found the going tough on Wednesday night against defending district champion Vauxhall in Vauxhall, Alberta. The Northstars dropped a pair of league games to the Spurs, lowering Havre’s overall record to 22-9. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Northstars got a strong pitching performance from Seth Jensen in a losing effort. Jensen pitched Well, but the Northstars defense and offense didn’t help him out in a 4-1 loss to the Spurs. In the second game of the doubleheader, Sean Peterson took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning for Havre, but the Northstars let the Spurs back into the contest, and wound up losing, 5-2. Both Havre teams will now prepare to host the annual Havre Baseball Jamboree. The tournament gets under way on Friday and will run through Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.
