John P. Brummer, 69, former Chinook area farmer, rancher, building contractor and Department of Transportation Highway Department soil analysts, died at a hospital in Hemet, Calif., Tuesday, June 19, 2007 due to natural causes.
Memorial funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church with vigil and rosary services on today at 7 p. m. in the church. John was born on Oct. 18, 1937, in Havre to Gerald and Dorothy (Kiedrowski) Brummer. He was raised on the family farm east of Chinook and attended grade school at East Chinook School and graduated from Chinook High School, later Montana State University in Bozeman with an ag-related degree and also attended computer science studies at Northern Montana College in Havre. John married Meredith “Mickey” Marshall in Lewistown on Aug. 16, 1959. John started farming and ranching south of Zurich in 1960 and later went into building contracting full time in 1980. In 1987 he started working for Montana Highway Department as a soil analyst and retired in 1998. He moved to California in 1999 to enjoy the sunshine and warmth. John was a avid hunter, enjoyed archery hunting, and his hobbies included wood working and swimming. He served on the Zurich and Chinook High School Boards and the Sweet Memorial Park Board for a number of years. He is preceded in death by son, Eric Brummer in May of 1980; wife, Meredith Brummer in February of 1981; and his parents, Gerald and Dorothy Brummer. John is survived by his son, Vincent Brummer of Ronan; daughters, Christie “Chris” Brummer of Ypsilanti, Mich., Lee Graham of Fort Collins, Colo.; brother, Joe Brummer of Chinook; a special friend and companion, Anna Mae Yarnall of Hemet; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
