So far, the 2007 high school football season has not been kind to the Big Sandy Pioneers. But, the turning point may just have come this past weekend when the Pioneers got a critical 22-20 win over Belt Friday night in Big Sandy. Big Sandy took control of the game right away, jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Trevor Darlington. The Pioneers kept the pressure on Belt in the second quarter and grabbed a 22-0 lead, following back-to-back touchdown runs of one and two yards by Darin Ray. However, Belt refused to go away quietly in the second half, rallying with two touchdown runs by Clint Urick, including a 65-yard scamper to trim the lead to 22-12. However, Belt was unable to convert the two-point conversion on either touchdown. Tanner Cummings scored again in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run, but it was not enough, as the missed two-point conversion attempts allowed Big Sandy to hang on for a twopoint win. The Pioneers (2-4) will host Power- Dutton-Brady on Friday night.
Sunburst 58, Rocky Boy 12 Sunburst got five combined touchdowns from Reece Clark and Shane Turner on its way to a 46-point first quarter in a 58-12 win over the Rocky Boy Northern Stars Friday night in Sunburst. Clark had touchdown runs of 40, 55 and 42 yards in the game, while Turner scored on a 30-yard interception of Rocky Boy quarterback Cliff Singer that he returned for a touchdown. He also hit paydirt on a 55-yard kickoff return. Rocky Boy got a score in the first quarter, when Singer hit Mike Sangrey on a 65-yard touchdown pass. The Stars only other touchdown came in the second quarter, when Singer returned a fumble 60-yards for a score. Rocky Boy (0-6) hosts Chinook on Friday night.
Harlem 53, Wolf Point 30 Despite falling behind 16-0 early in the first quarter, the Harlem Wildcats' offense exploded for 31 points in the second quarter to rally for an impressive 53-30 win, the team’s first of the season. Trailing 16-0, the Wildcats got the play that changed the game, as Isiah Martin returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to trim the lead to 16-8, then from that point on, everything went the Wildcats way. Miles Werk scored on touchdown runs on one and 30 yards, followed by a touchdown run by quarterback Rick Haluszka to take a 32-16 lead. Then the Wildcats scored on a 56- yard interception return from Tyler Mc- Cann, as well as a 34-yard blocked punt return by Cameron Gilham to push the lead to 53-16. Werk added another touchdown run in the third quarter, his third of the game. With the first win of the year, the Wildcats are 1-5 as they visit top-ranked Cut Bank on Friday night.
Geraldine 58, North Star 34 The North Star Knights season continued to spiral in a downward direction Saturday in Geraldine, where they were completely dominated in a 58-34 defeat. Steven Rios had two touchdown runs and a touchdown reception to help lead Geraldine to the win. Teammate Jesse Schmidt also had four touchdowns, two receiving, one rushing and another on a kickoff return. Adam Chvilicek had three touchdowns on runs of one yard and 33 yards, as well as a touchdown reception of 11 yards from quarterback Zach Halter. Nolan Preeshl also had two touchdown receptions from Halter, who had three touchdown passes in the loss. The Knights are now 3-3 on the season with the loss. They host Augusta on Saturday.
Chester/J-I 44, Chinook 0 Chester/J-I continued its strong play late in the season with a 44-0 victory over the Chinook Sugarbeeters Saturday in Chinook. Callan McKinley hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Han in the first quarter to give the Hawks an 8-0 lead. Then Zack Melton plowed in from two yards out to give the Hawks a 16-0 halftime lead. Melton had another touchdown run in the third quarter, combined with two touchdown passes by Han to Shay Richter and another to McKinley to put the Beeters away. Han totaled three touchdown passes in the win, while Melton had three touchdown runs and McKinley added a pair of touchdown receptions for C/J-I. The Hawks (4-2) will stay on the road this week with an importnant game at Simms Friday night.
PDB 40, Hays-Lodge Pole 0 Its been a long season for the Hays- Lodge Pole Thunderbirds, and it didn’t get any easier for them this Saturday, when they played host to No. 3 Power- Dutton-Brady. PDB got four touchdowns from alleverything running back Chad Sievers, who scored on runs of 21, 4 and 36 yards, as well as a touchdown reception of 36 yards from Travis Somerfeld in a 40-0 win over the T-Birds. Somerfeld had three touchdown passes in the win, as he also hooked up with Loy Bink twice on passes of 23 and eight yards in the win. HLP (1-5) will travel to Belt on Saturday afternoon.
The Box Elder Bears fell to 1-5 on the season after being forced to forfeit their game to Augusta this weekend. The Bears, who just began playing football again last season, did get their first win since their return earlier in the season, but were forced to forfeit the game that was scheduled for Saturday.
