WINIFRED A. STATELEN obituary

Winifred A. Statelen, 82, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the Northern Montana Care Center Hospice wing of natural causes.

Cremation will take place and her memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Highland Cemetery with Rowlie Hutton officiating. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the Eagles immediately after the services at the graveside. Winifred was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Harlem to Albert and Alice (Sheridan) Statelen Sr. She was raised and educated in Turner and raised on the family homestead. She obtained her teaching certificate and taught at Davey School from 1942 to 1944. Winifred worked as a clerk for F.A. Buttrey’s, for Dave Blumfield and at Marra Grocery. In 1976, she owned and operated Iwen Grocery in Wolf Point. She raised three daughters. Winifred loved to bake. She made the best homemade breads. She was a very creative person who enjoyed making nantucket baskets and crocheting afghans. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Winifred enjoyed bowling and at one time owned a bowling alley in Hot Springs. She retired at the age of 74 and moved to Arizona for four years. She returned to Montana to live near her daughters. Winifred was a kind and loving person and always spoke kindly about everyone she knew and met. She loved her children and her grandchildren were the highlight of her life. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Statelen in 1960; mother, Alice Statelen in 1982; brothers, Vernon, Wayne and Albert Statelen; and sisters, Ethel, Loy and Minnie. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Landsverk of Havre, Judy Iwen of Tempe, Ariz., and Ann Stuart of Chinook; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Instead of flowers memorial contributions in Winifred’s honor may be made to Bear Paw Hospice, C/O NMH, P.O. Box 1231, Havre, MT 59501. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
