Genevieve “Gevi” Nez Perce Weaving, 49, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, after a long battle with cancer at Northren Montana Care Center.
A rosary and wake is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the St. Paul’s Mission Recreation Center in Hays. A funeral mass is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the St. Paul’s Mission Recreation Center with the Rev. Bob Erickson, S. J. and Rev. Joseph Retzel, S.J. officiating. The committal rite will follow at the St. Paul’s Mission Cemetery. A fellowship reception will follow the committal service at the Mission Recreation Center. “Gevi” was born Jan. 18, 1958, to Edgar and Caroline (Nez Perce) Shambo at Fort Belknap. She grew up in Hays and graduated from the Flandreau Indian School in 1976 and from Northern Montana College in 1999, with a Bachelor’s degree in business. From 1976 to 1980 she served in the U.S. Army first at Ft. Benning, Ga., then at Camp Darby in Italy. She also resided in Oakland and Hollister, Calif., Chinook and Harlem. She spent the majority of her time in Billings and Havre. Gevi worked for the Fort Belknap Tribes in several different programs and the Fort Belknap College Small Business Development Center. Gevi met and married Leonard Weaving, Jr. In 1990 in Havre, the couple raised three children together. Gevi loved to read and go hunting and fishing with her family. She also enjoyed visiting and joking with her many friends and family. She loved to watch her son Matthew play sports baseball, basketball and football. She also loved to watch sports on TV with her with her son and family; and spending time at Beaver Creek Park hunting and fishing with her family. She looked forward each year to the Nez Perce Family reunion in Hays on Memorial Day. She was preceded in death by her mother, Caroline Nez Perce; father, Edgar Shambo; grandparents, Joseph and Annie Nez Perce; aunts, Katie Snow, Mary Snow and Martha Buck. Genevieve is survived by her husband, Leonard Weaving, Jr of Missoula; sons, Matthew “Matt” Dean Weaving of Havre and Justin John Weaving of Ronan; daughter, Courtney Rayne Weaving of Ronan; sisters, Cheryl (Doug) Schmidt of Portland, Ore., Ina (Raymond) Nez Perce-Chandler of Fort Belknap, Robyn Roberson of Arcadia, Calif., Dara Lyn Shambo and Darlene Shambo, both of Hays; brothers, Francis (J’Shon) Skinner of Fort Belknap, Stuart “Squeak” (Debra) Nez Perce of Billings, Jaime Nez Perce of New Rockford, N.D., Neil (Chris) Skinner of Billings and Cory Shambo of Hays; grandfather, Moses Nez Perce, aunts, Lou Nez Perce Werk and Sophie Latray, uncles, Louie (Jeannie) Shambo, Dennis (Pat) Nez Perce, father-in-law, Leonard “Leo” Weaving, Sr. Sisters-inlaws, Sonya (Mike) Weaving and Lauri (Tim) Rosette; brothersin- laws, Jack Weaving and Russell (Kristie) Weaving; and one granddaughter and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Services and arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook.
