Malcolm William Marshall, 86, a U.S. Navy veteran and retired Montana Highway Department employee, passed away of natural causes on Feb. 21, 2008, at a Great Falls care center.
Private memorial services will be held in a Great Falls cemetery on Saturday, April 26, and a public reception will be held at Borrie’s Restaurant in Black Eagle from 11 a.m. to 1 p. m. the same day. He was born in Spokane, Wash., on Feb. 26, 1921, the son of Carl Marshall and Margaret J. (Bell) Marshall. He attended Great Falls schools and was married in Great Falls in 1941 to Marie S. Bistodeau. He began employment with Eddy’s Bakery prior to entering the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Drew, a troop carrier in the Pacific Fleet. Following his honorable Navy discharge, he resumed employment with Eddy’s, and also worked at the Sally Ann Bakery. Later he moved his family into an apartment adjoining the Fifth Avenue Ice Cream Shop, which he managed for a time. He was also an assistant manager of the former Super Save Drug, before beginning employment with Montana Power Company for 11 years. His last job, from which he retired, was with the Montana State Highway Department; he drove a snowplow in the winter and a “broom” in the summer. His wife of 66 years, Marie, preceded him in death in July 2007. Also preceding him were his parents, Carl and Margaret Marshall; a sister, Mary Shortridg; and a brother, Douglas Dobson. He belonged to the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross, the Elks, the Vets’ Club and the Teamsters. He worked the Montana State Fair for Montana Power and was shop steward for the Highway Department. Malcolm always flew the American flag in his yard every weekend. Family and friends enjoyed going with him to the cabin in Wolf Creek Canyon. He later sold the cabin sites at Marshall Lanes. He enjoyed keeping up his house and yard. He played horseshoes, volleyball, badminton, croquet, dice and lots of cards. Survivors include daughters, Del Marie Marshall (Jerry) Chapman of Scottsdale, Ariz. And Nancy Marshall (Jerry) Waltari of Havre; grandchildren including Paige (Jay) Daniels of Tucson, Ariz.; Carter Chapman of Phoenix, Ariz,; Casey (Shantel) Waltari of Cody, Wyo.; Scott Waltari of Auburn, Wash.; and Tyler (Katie) Chapman of Dallas, and nine great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a niece, Carla Haygood of Texas, and nephews, Winston Shortridge of Cascade; Bill Dobson of Arizona; and Doug Dobson, Jr. Of Great Falls.
