Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Lumpkin of Minneapolis, 82, went home to her Heavenly Father on Sept. 30, 2008, after a long battle with a blood disease.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at the Calvary Section of the Highland Cemetery in Havre, Mont. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Jude Thaddeus School. P.O. Box 407, Havre, MT 59501; or to Carondelet Catholic School, 3210 W. 51st St., Minneapolis, MN 55410. The family invites all friends to contact them via Gill Brothers Funeral Home in Minneapolis at (612) 861-6088, or via Holland and Bonine Funeral Home in Havre at 265-4371. Born in Havre, on March 7, 1926, Betty attended St. Jude Catholic School and graduated from high school in 1944. She graduated from Northern Montana College in 1946 as a medical secretary. She worked for the State of Montana in Helena for four years, and then moved to Minneapolis. In approximately 1954 she joined Pillsbury as a private secretary and stayed for more than 20 years. She later retired from the Hennepin County Health Department. A strong pro-life advocate, Betty was committed to her family, her Catholic faith, volunteer work, her many close friends, and the arts in Minneapolis. She was elegant and kind, and always carried herself with poise and dignity. Her father was an engineer with the Great Northern Railroad, and she loved to travel by train from 1954-1983 to visit them in Havre and help care for them. When her nieces visited, she always showed them the city’s sights and took them to museums, plays, and the basilicas. She was preceded in death by her parents, John S. and Mary J. Lumpkin, her sister, Mary Lou, and her brother, Jack. She is survived by her sister, Cecelia Bentley of Chanute, Kan., her brother, Bill of Great Falls, Mont., and her brother, Tom of Cheyenne, Wyo. She also leaves six nieces and four nephews in Kansas, Texas, California and Maryland, and 10 great nieces and nephews.
