Huntley Project High School destroyed by fire

WORDEN

An early morning fire destroyed Huntley Project High School today and officials canceled classes for all grades kindergarten through 12th for today and Friday in Worden. High school Principal Tynie Mader said fire officials told her the blaze was suspicious. The roof over much of the one-story school collapsed in a shower of sparks and flames as the fire raged through the school about 20 miles northeast of Billings. Fire departments from Worden, Shepherd, Lockwood and Billings responded to the call at the school. A passer-by spotted the fire at about 2 a.m. and called 9-1-1 to report it. By 5 a.m., the fire stretched the entire length of the building. The school serves grades nine through 12 from Worden, Ballantine, Huntley and Pompeys Pillar. The building, which was completed in the fall of 1968, includes nine classrooms, a library and the gym. About 230 students attend the high school, while other grades are housed in other buildings on the same campus. (AP)
