Erwin Orin Effinger, 86, a Hingham area farmer, died of natural causes Sunday March 16, 2008, at his winter home in Jenks, Okla.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Oklahoma. Erwin was laid to rest in the Calvary Cemetery at Tulsa, Okla. Erwin was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Alberta, Canada. He was one of four children born to Erwin W. Effinger and Oringa (Johnson) Effinger. When he was a child, the family moved to Montana and started the Effinger Oil Company in Hingham. Erwin received his education in Hingham, where he graduated from high school in 1940. He served in the U. S. Army from 1942-44 during World War II, then returned to the family farm at Hingham. He enjoyed his life as a Montana wheat farmer until his retirement in 1996 at age 74. Erwin and wife, Dorothy, spent many of their winters in Arizona before purchasing a home in Jenks a few years ago. During his life in Hingham Erwin went by many nicknames, including “E.O.”, “Sonny”, and “Smokey”. He was known for his great sense of humor and he loved to tease. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Clarence and Glenn, a daughter, Janie, and a stepson, David. Survivors are his wife, Dorothy Effinger of Jenks.; daughter, Marla Almeida of Milwaukie, Ore.; son, Doug Effinger of Hingham; daughter, Donna Forkan of Lincoln; stepson, Dan Nader of Tulsa.; sister, Irene Kannberg of Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. No Hi-Line services have been scheduled at this time. Rockman Funeral Chapel assisted the family with preliminary details.
