A fire in downtown Havre Monday night damaged four businesses, with firefighters stopping the blaze before it spread to cause further damage. Havre Fire Chief Dave Sheppard said the fire was reported at 10:58 p.m. when a passerby smelled smoke on the 300 block of 3rd Street. “We were fortunate that they did because the fire could have been a lot worse ,” he said. “It did extensive damage in that (space) and did considerable damage to the businesses on either side.” The fire originated in the basement of Bright Ideas Advert ising & Consulting LLC, and had burned through into the first floor of the building. Sheppard said 13 firefighters and two fire trucks responded, and were able to put out the fire before it spread further. Smoke damage occurred to businesses on either side of the actual fire, Sheppard said, inc luding the Kostelecky Chiropractic Clinic, the offices of attorney Chris Young and the 3rd Street State Farm Insurance office. Bright Ideas Advertising was open this morning, as was State Farm. “Right now the businesses are trying to do cleaning and get things up and running again,” Sheppard said. Curtis Kostelecky said this morning That he also was open for business. The damage to his business was all due to smoke, he said. “The insurance people are cleaning it up as we speak,” he said. Sheppard said that the cause of the fire is under investigation, with nothing definite as yet. “It appears to be an electrical malfunction, but we’re not certain at this point, we’re still looking into that,” he said. The time of the fire meant the businesses were empty, Sheppard said. “The properties were closed for the night, so there were no injuries,” he said.
