Stretch of U.S. 2 to remain two-lane

Montana is working on a proposal to four-lane U.S. Highway 2 between Culbertson and the North Dakota border. But North Dakota officials say there are no plans yet to four-lane the last 12 miles of U.S. 2 in North Dakota. Crews are finishing up 30 miles of new four-lane between Williston and Minot. When work is done this fall, all of U.S. 2 in North Dakota will be a four-lane highway except for the 12 miles from Williston to the Montana line. Transportation Department spokeswoman Billie Jo Lorius says the agency has no plans to widen those 12 miles of highway until Montana four-lanes the highway to the border. Officials announced earlier this month that an environmental impact statement found no significant impact of widening U. S. 2 from the North Dakota border to Culbertson. But it's only one step in the process. (AP)
