Pioneers beat Chinook to finish strong in 6C East

This weekend marked the end of the regular season for Class B and C volleyball teams around the Hi-Line area. And now, the time has come for teams to make a run at postseason success. The final weekend of regular season play saw Chinook get its weekend started right with a four-game win over Class B power Malta. The Beeters beat the M-Ettes by scores of 18-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17, and got 14 kills and one block from Kelsie Hanson in the process. However, Friday night's big showdown between the Beeters and Big Sandy went the way of the Pioneers, as they knocked off Chinook by scores of 25-16, 14-25, 25-22 and 25-22 in Big Sandy. The Pioneers, who tied Chinook atop the District 6C East standings, were paced by Suzy Faber with 12 kills and three blocks, while Devin Lackner added 14 digs and Josi Herron had 22 assists. Hanson again led the Beeters with eight kills and 11 assists, and Krista Johnson recorded 23 digs and three aces in the loss. In nonconference action on Friday night, both Rocky Boy and North Star dropped their final matches of the regular season. The Morning Stars fell to Centerville by scores of 25-21, 30-28, 22-25 and 25-16. Rocky Boy did get a big match from DaiShawn Whitford, who had nine of the Morning Stars 26 kills. Jordan Big Knife added 11 assists in the loss. Meanwhile, the Knights were beaten by Sunburst in three games by scores of 25-12, 26-24 and 25-21 in Rudyard. North Star did get 10 kills and five blocks form Jenna Kapperud in the loss, while Mariana Jochim had 15 assists. In District 6C West action, Chester/ J-I closed out its regular season with a split. The Hawks beat Power by scores of 23-25, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-15. Lyndsey Oraw led C/J-I with 12 aces and six digs, and Jenni Ghekiere had seven kills in the win. C/J-I also dropped a tough four-game match to Simms at home over the weekend. The Tigers downed the Hawks by scores of 26-28, 25-5, 25-12 and 25-18. In the loss, C/J-I was paced by Lexi Lybeck's 17 assists, while Ghekiere had six kills. The postseason in high school volleyball begins on Thursday with the district tournament's on the Hi-Line. The District 6C-East tourney will be held in Rudyard starting Thursday night, and the 6C West tourney will take place in Chester. The District 2B tournament will be Friday and Saturday in Malta, and teams will be vying for sports in the Northern B and Northern C divisional tournaments.
