Walter Newlyn Dochterman, 62, died Sunday night at Northern Montana Care Center of a gelioblastoma brain tumor.
Cremation has taken place, and his memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at Holland & Bonine Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Dahle officiating. Military honors will be held immediately after the service on the front lawn of the funeral home. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. Walter was born Nov. 25, 1946, in Keokuk, Iowa, one of four children born to Charles N. and Virginia (Fletcher) Dochterman. He was raised in Missouri and entered into the United States Navy in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1974 as an E-5. He then enlisted in the Army Reserves for two years at Fort Irwin in California. He married Lois Ann Chastain in Montana on Feb. 17, 1976. Walter worked as a drug and alcohol counselor for the state of Montana and the family moved throughout the state. The family moved to Havre in 2000 where Walter worked for TLC as a drug and alcohol counselor. He retired from his position in February 2002. Walter enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and restoring classic cars. He was a family-orientated man who loved his children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed teaching them how to fish. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, in 1998. Walter is survived by his wife, Lois Dochterman of Havre, Mont.; his mother, Virginia Dochterman of Oregon; his children, Sue (Mike) Streeter of Missouri, Tracy (John) Evans of Little Rock, Ark., Christopher Dochterman of Havre, Mont., Jackie (Jason) Miller of Anaconda, Mont., Bryce (Tequesta) Dochterman of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Virginia (John) Schaffer of Havre, Mont. Other survivors include two step-children, Lori Ordiniza of Havre, Mont., and Joseph Butler of Havre, Mont.; a brother, Fredrick Dochterman of Des Moines, Iowa; and his sisters, Debrah of Oregon and Corliss “Corky” Rieneke Edgerton, Mo.
