Joseph J. Zygmond, 86, of Havre, died Aug. 20, 2009, at the Care and Comfort Home in Havre of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 21, 1922, to Alex and Olga (Hubert) Zygmond in Havre. He graduated from Havre High in 1941 and began working for the railroad the same year. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army later proudly serving in The Battle of The Bulge as a tank driver. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a corporal, returning to Havre where he went back to work for the Burlington Northern Rail road as a material clerk. He married Zonie Paluck on Sept. 22, 1956, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church. They made their home in Havre. Joe was a very active member of the Unified Veterans Council Honor Guard and the Havre VFW. He was very devoted to his church, assisting for several years as a mentor to children that were gift bearers for the Catholic Mass. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jane Callahan; and his brothers, Lou, John, Jack and Alex Zygmond. Joe is survived by his loving wife of more than 52 years, Zonie Zygmond of Havre; his sister Margaret Webb of Havre; and his sisters-in-law, Marcia Zygmond and “Mike” Zygmond, both of Billings and Leslie Zygmond of Helena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church with Father Dale Yurkovic as celebrant. Burial will immediately follow at the Highland Cemetery with military honor guard services conducted by the Unified Veteran’s Council Honor Guard. Friends may pay their respects at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Home in Havre beginning Tuesday with vigil services to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
