Gavis A. Schafer, 78, of Havre, died at her home surrounded by her loving family on April 26, 2010, from lung cancer.  Gavis was born Jan. 17, 1932, in Almont, N.D., to Bernard E. and Rena (Johnson) Ringham.  She attended school in Almont and also attended Dickinson State University.  Gavis met and later married Richard Schafer on Sept. 2, 1953, in Almont, N.D. To this union were born two daughters, Cheryl and Julie, and one son, Kelly.  Richard and Gavis lived in Billings, Mont., and Jamestown, N.D., before coming to Havre in 1961.  She was a local Avon representative and enjoyed making a loving home for her family.  She thoroughly enjoyed home decorating and attending her grandchildrens’ activities.  Gavis was a devoted member of the St. Judes Thaddeus Catholic community, a member of Catholic Daughters, the Catholic Altar Society and home demonstration.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Eveyln Kunkel and Bernice Ringham; and her brother, Bernard Ringham.  Gavis is survived by her husband, Richard; her daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl (Daryl) Morse of Havre and Julie (Karl) Schottstaedt of Petaluma, Calif.; her son and daughter-inlaw, Kelly (Carmen) Schafer of Havre; her grandchildren, Nathan Schafer of Great Falls, Mont., Ryan Schafer of Havre, Mont., Sierra and Lisa Marie Morse of Havre, Mont., and Erich, A.J. and Jade Schottstaedt of Petaluma, Calif.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Troy, Cheyenne, Kaleb, Kelly Jr.  And Kasey Schafer of Havre.  Gavis is also survived by her special niece Jean Waterson; and special nephews, Jerry, Ray, Don and Ken Kunkel, all of Billings, and Bryan Ringham of Bismarck, N.D. Vigil services will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at the St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Saturday at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church with Father Dale Yurkovic officiaing.  Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made in Gavis’ name to the St. Jude's School Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Services are in the care of Holland & Bonine Funeral Home of Havre.
