The regular season of study and concerts for the Havre High School music programs wrapped up with a final concert Tuesday, with one more trip set for some of Havre’s singers: a trip to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York.
“I am frankly stunned and excited and incredibly proud of our students for achieving this honor,” said Patrick Ryan, director of the HHS choir.
Six members of the high school’s A Capella Choir — Karla Hellegaard, Kelsey Bakke, Kaylee Schubert, Lauren Scofield, Aaron Alderson and Colton Wedding — will spend five days and four nights in New York in preparation to participate in the New York premiere of Eric Whitacre’s “Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings” June 15. Ryan said that, due to financial considerations, the entire A Cappella Choir is unable to make the trip.
The show will be performed in the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall, with Whitaker conducting.
Ryan said the Havre High students will be performing with students from 10 other choirs from around the United States and abroad.
The last few weeks have been busy for the musicians.
The choir groups performed a pop concert Tuesday at the high school, which included the annual tradition of presenting roses to the parents of the seniors in honor of the graduating class.
Dave Johnke, director of the Havre High band, presented the last band concert at the high school last week. He said he now is in the midst of planning the marching band camp held each fall at the start of the school year.
The concerts and current planning followed another successful year for Havre High in the District and State Music festivals.
At the festivals, professional musicians and educators adjudicate performances of high school musicians, rating them on a five-point scale with the best score “superior” and the second-best “excellent.” Receiving a superior rating at the District Music Festival qualifies the students to compete at the State Music Festival.
The festivals are not a competition, with each perfomance adjudicated on its own merit.
The adjudicator provides suggestions and comments to the musicians after their performance.
“I'm extremely pleased with the kids' participation and level of excellence,” Ryan said about the Havre High musicians’ peformance at the festivals.
