For most, Babe Ruth baseball has been over for several weeks now.  But for a select few the season will continue for at least one more weekend.

Wednesday through Sunday Legion Field in Havre will house 11 of the state's best 13-year-old baseball teams in the Babe Ruth State Tournament.

Teams in the tournament will include South Valley, Kalispell, Helena, Bozeman, Northern, Glacier, Hi-Line, North Valley, Mission and Lewistown.

Havre will also have an All-Star team present made up of head coach Kevin Sukut and players Jake Williams, Jace Billy, Tyrell Pierce, Ryne Antley, Alec Drew, Kaden Sukut, Kyle Gooch, Deion Hammett, Dakota Christianson, Gavin Gunderson, Travis Roth and Jace Kato.

The tournament opens up on Wednesday, but Havre’s first game will come at 7 p.m. on Thursday against North Valley.

Havre will then face Lewistown on Friday at 7 p.m. and Mission on Saturday at 2 p.m. And even though the weekend’s competition is a mystery, coach Sukut thinks he and his All-Stars will be able to compete this weekend.

“When you get into a state tournament situation everybody that is going to be there is going to be solid,” Sukut said.

“But I think we will be ok this weekend.

“In other sports you have a chance to see the competition and see what things are like,” Sukut added.  “But in these allstar tournaments it’s completely different, we’ve not seen any teams we are going to play.  In a way it’s unique and fun because it’s all brand new.  We are playing against the best kids in the state and it’s exciting to see how we will stack up.” In preparation Havre has played a number of practice games.

Sukut has confidence they can matchup and compete with any team they face, but they do have some areas could use some improvement.  And the main area of focus is their play at the plate.  As of late their hitting has been up and down, and Sukut is looking for more consistency.

“I think we should be very competitive,” Sukut said.  “But have been pretty patchy with that (batting).  Also we have had some errors in our practice games so we would like to limit those and play better defense as well.” Havre knows what they need to fix and tweak before this weekends competition, and it has been stressed in practice.

But more than anything, an All- Star team at this level has to have team chemistry.  The roster is filled with talented athletes, but from all different teams.  They haven’t played a whole lot together, and chemistry will be key.

“When you put groups of kids together from different teams,” Sukut said.

“The most important thing is the chemistry.

And once you get that where it needs to be you have to get the kids comfortable in their roles and positions.” Hitting the ball may have been up and down for Havre, but a definite strength will be their pitching ability and pitching depth.

Havre has six kids that can take the mound and be effective.  And with round robin play taking place before actual tournament play, a deep pitching pool will be key with a number of games on the Havre schedule.

Pierce is the strongest pitcher in the Havre lineup, while Gunderson and Williams also look very strong.

“You are going to see quite a few games and you have to have a deep pitching staff,” Sukut said.  “I would say from a consistency standpoint, (Pierce, Gunderson and Williams) are our strongest pitchers.  But we’ve got three other guys that can come in and throw strikes and get the job done for us too.” Technically Havre has home field advantage, but with a talented field like this one, there will be little advantage.

But advantage or not, the Havre All- Stars are ready to play.

“The kids are excited,” Sukut said.

“It’s an opportunity to play some more baseball.” The Babe Ruth State Tournament will run Wednesday through Sunday, but Havre’s first game will come at 7

p. m. on Thursday against North Valley.

Havre will then face Lewistown on Friday at 7 p.m. and Mission on Saturday at 2 p.m.
