Term: Four years
Pay: Senators are paid a salary at a rate equal to the daily rate of an employee earning $10.33 an hour while the Legislature is in session, with the Senate president and House speaker earning an additional $5 a day. Legislators also are paid expenses and mileage for travelling to and back from the session.
Between sessions, legislators are paid their salary and expenses and mileage for days spent on legislative duties.
Duties: Montana senators meet every two years in legislative session to pass the laws and budget of the state, subject to approval by the members of the House and the governor.
Senators are selected to sit on committees which break up the business of the state into categories.
Senators also are selected to sit on interim committees, which review issues between sessions and work on legislation to propose in the next session.
