Phone scam hits Havre
Tim Leeds
The Havre Police Department is warning people in the area that a telephone scam is coming back through the region.
In the scam, someone calls a victim, typically an older person, and claims to be their grandchild. The caller says they have been arrested, usually due to a traffic accident, and needs money to be bailed out of jail. The victim is asked to wire money to the caller.
The caller typically asks the grandparent not to call the parents of the grandchild, so the caller won’t get in trouble.
Often in this kind of scam, the caller tricks the victim into saying the name of a grandchild to use during the scam.
The same kind of scam was used in the area late last year.
The police department urges residents to not wire money if they receive such a call. The best course of action is to contact the grandchild and make sure everything is all right.
