The second of three Maroon/Gold Duals went as well as the first for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team.
The Lights were in Glasgow Monday night as part of a tour of Montana in preparation for their season-opening dual against North Idaho College.
In their second intra-squad scrimmage of the season, the Lights conducted eight wrestle-off matches in front of an excited Glasgow crowd according to head coach Tyson Thivierge as the Maroon team beat the Gold team 21-13.
"It was a good night all the way around," Thivierge said. "The crowd was great, they really showed up to support us, and I think we put on some good matches for them.
"We didn't wrestle as many matches as we did in Ronan," he added. "We held a few guys out because they are a little banged up. But the matches we wrestled were all good matches. And all of our guys wrestled really well."
Of note, Demitrios Mitchell beat Glendive's Garret Tennant at 141 pounds by a score of 10-6 on Monday night. Tennant beat Mitchell in Ronan, so the two will have one more wrestle-off for a varsity spot on the Lights' roster.
Another exciting match took place at 175 pounds where freshman Max Payne came back to defeat Jared Miller in a tightly-contested 7-5 decision.
"There were some really good matches," Thivierge said. "And some of the matchups from really tightened up from when they wrestled in Ronan. We've got a lot of guys really competing hard right now, and they are wrestling well. It's really good to see."
The Maroon overtook the Gold because of three pins on Monday night.
Former Havre Blue Pony Ryan Shelstad pinned Derek Rogers at 133 pounds, while James Petersen pinned former Poplar star Cole Gorder at 149 pounds. The Maroon also got a pin from senior Tay Todd at 157 pounds, as Todd moved to 2-0 in the preseason.
The Maroon team added a final win at heavyweight from Rudy Shaffroth, who is also 2-0 in the scrimmages.
At 197 pounds, the Gold got a major decision from Kody Reed. He defeated teammate Nick King 13-5, while Cody Miller added an 11-4 major decision over Mickey Cheff at 157 pounds.
Northern has two preseason scrimmages left before their season-opening dual with North Idaho Oct. 29 in Havre.
On Wednesday night, the Lights will hold their final Maroon/Gold Dual at 7 p.m. at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse.
