An armed robbery took place at Magic Diamond Casino, on the 100 block of 1st Street West, at 1:30 this morning.

Havre Police Department Sgt. Derek Mahlum said this morning that the male suspect entered the business wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a Halloween mask with a skull design, and had a large knife.

The suspect is between 5-foot, 7-inches to 5-foot, 9 inches, between 195 to 220 pounds, and has a husky, stocky build. Mahlum added that the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money.

Bruce Grant was the sole player in the casino at the time and the first to call the police.

According to Grant, he was playing at a gambling machine while an experienced attendant trained a newly hired staff member. Grant didn't know what to make of the thief at first.

"He was wearing one of those ‘Scream’ masks," Grant said. "I thought it was a joke."

No one laughed, however, when the masked man put a knife to the new employee's throat while the other filled a bag with money.

The man came over to Grant, demanding his cell phone, which Grant had left in his truck, and forced him to his knees. When the knife-wielding robber went back to the two employees, Grant ran out to his truck, locked the door and called the police.

The man chased Grant outside, pulling on the locked door, until Grant pulled his truck back, facing the thief.

"I was really debating whether I should just run his ass over," Grant said.

Instead Grant chased the man in his car around 2nd Street, then lost him behind the Town Pump car wash just before the police arrived.

Mahlum said anyone who has any information about the crime can contact him at the police department at 265-4361.
