Mavis Schmaltz
On Oct. 15, 2010, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Mavis Marie (McMillan) Schmaltz, 82 years old, passed away surrounded by her loving family.
A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at 11 a. m., at Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. A reception will follow at Fifth Avenue Christian Church. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
Mavis was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Faribault, Minn., to Truman and Clara McMillan. She was raised in Elk River, Minn., where she helped her parents operate their grocery store.
In 1949, she married Robert Kuntz, and they had two children, Art and Paula. Robert passed away in 1951. She met Wendelin Schmaltz in Bismarck, N.D., and married him on March 3, 1954. Together they had two children, Kathy and Richard. Mavis was a homemaker, but also spent time as a seamstress for the Holiday on Ice seasonal production, which opened its show each year in Bismarck. She also worked as a ward clerk for Medcenter One. Mavis remained in Bismarck after her husband Wendelin’s (Windy) death in 1997, and then moved to Havre, Mont., in 2002 to be closer to family.
Mavis enjoyed quilting, sewing, painting and spending time with her family. She was an avid gardener, and you could often find her in the yard paying special attention to her beloved rose bushes. In the winter months, you could find her painting landscapes, flowers and animals that could take your breath away.
During baseball season, Mavis enjoyed watching or listening to the Minnesota Twins. She also was a devoted Democrat, who was not afraid to tell anyone exactly what she thought.
Mavis is preceded in death by her parents, Truman and Clara, and husbands, Robert and Windy.
She is survived by her children, Art (Jean) Kuntz of Redmond, Wash., Paula (Don) Kreps of Lilburn, Ga., Kathy (Ron) Fanning of Havre, and Richard (Judy) Schmaltz of Knoxville, Tenn. ; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
