Touch down — and a smooth landing for the airport
As the saying goes, “when one door closes another door opens, ” and that’s how we see the change in air service provided by Great Lakes Airlines. Starting Monday, Nov. 1, daily flights from Havre to Billings will end, except for one scheduled round-trip flight on Sundays. The door that is swinging open will give Havre air travelers daily access to Denver International Airport and its 106 national and international daily destinations.
Last Friday, the Havre City-County Airport Board voted to adopt the new Havre to Denver flight schedule. We know that this was a difficult decision for the board and commend the board for making the right decision after listening to the community’s input. This was a perfect example of a public entity operating in transparency and doing the right thing for the good of the community.
Numerous businesses and community leaders expressed strong support for the Havre to Denver connection and the benefits it brings. Now Havre business and recreational travelers can connect directly with Denver, saving time and money. But with this change comes a caveat — it’s put up or shut up time. The benefits of this change are huge, and the business entities supporting this change have to start flying out of Havre, or we could stand to lose service altogether.
The airport board and Great Lakes Airlines will be closely monitoring flight passenger-loads for increases. Great Lakes Airlines’ contract is up next year and CEO Chuck Howell has said he expects the contract to be renewed. In today’s economic climate there are no guarantees, and we should leave nothing to chance.
The Havre-Hill County Airport is a diamond in the rough and an untapped resource of our community. The economic development possibilities alone are huge and would be a key selling point for anyone wanting to relocate a business to the industrial park. Excellent air and rail access is essential for any business wanting to relocate, as well as an excellent school system, medical facilities, a university and recreational opportunities — now does that not describe Havre and Hill County?
As you start planning your holiday trips to visit family and friends who live out of state, think Havre-Hill County Airport and forget the two-hour drive to Great Falls, the long security lines and daily parking fees. Think Havre-Hill County Airport.
