Havre meeting to look at energy code changes

A meeting is slated in Havre next week to look at changes in residential energy code requirements adopted in 2009.
Havre’s director of public works, David Peterson, said the Wednesday, Nov. 3, meeting will show anyone planning to do work to build, remodel or add to residences what the new code requirements means to them.
“It’s for everybody, ” he said. “Contractors, homeowners, anybody interested in doing that kind of work. ”
Havre will be adopting the state code — the International Energy Conservation Code — and after that all plans for new construction, and certain alterations and renovations must comply with the code.
The 2009 code was adopted with several amendments specific to Montana and those items will be discussed during the session.
The Havre session, being held by the state Department of Environmental Quality, will cover issues including basement insulation requirements, additional air sealing, improved window standards, efficient lighting requirements, and air duct sealing testing options and requirements.
Houses designed to the new code should use about 15 percent less energy than a similarly-sized house built to the old code, and should offer more comfort and better resistance to moisture damage.
Peterson said the primary focus for the session is on contractors, who then also can tell property owners and clients about the energy code requirements.
Anyone doing work on a residence, however, from erecting an addition to making renovations, will benefit from the session, he added.
He said people renovating an older home may have difficulties meeting the new code completely, but that allowances are made for that issue.
“They make it so (homeowners) can meet the code as close as possible, ” Peterson said.
He said nothing is required to sign up for the Havre session, which is free and open to the public. People simply can show up at the door and register there.
The training will be conducted in the downstairs meeting room at Havre City Hall located at 520 4th St. The training session will be conducted from 1:30 p. m. to 4:30 p. m. Registrations will be taken at the door and will begin at 1 p. m.
