BOZEMAN  A Gallatin County official says an autopsy has confirmed that a Montana Highway Patrol officer died of gunshot wounds to the lower torso and head.
Sheriff Jim Cashell, who is also the Gallatin County coroner, late Saturday released a statement about the autopsy performed at the Montana State Crime Lab.
At age 23, David DeLaittre (duh-LATE') is the youngest trooper in Montana to die in the line of duty.
DeLaittre was killed Wednesday in an apparent shootout after he stopped to investigate a truck parked in the middle of a road outside Three Forks.
The alleged gunman, Errol Brent Bouldin, was found dead in his truck hours later about 35 miles north. Officials have not released a cause of death, but say he may have been wounded in the shootout with DeLaittre.
