HELENA — The House is endorsing a concealed carry gun rights bill that would allow those with concealed weapon permits to carry a gun into now-prohibited places like a bank, government office or bar.
House Bill 384 sponsored by Republican Rep. Krayton Kerns of Laurel was endorsed by a 59-40 vote on Wednesday.
Reps. Wendy Warburton, R-Havre, and Kris Hansen voted for the measure. Rep. Tony Belcourt, D-Box Elder, voted no.
Supporters say it doesn't make sense to ban guns in certain places and argue law abiding gun owners will make these places safer. Opponents say there are certain places where guns don't make sense, such as raucous bars.
Another concealed weapons bill that would allow people to carry a concealed weapon without a permit failed to get out of the House Judiciary Committee. The measures are among several gun rights bills that Kerns has sponsored during the session.
