It’s a big weekend for the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball club, just as last weekend was.
Only this time, the North Stars play four important Northern A games at home.
On Saturday, Havre will host the Tri-County Cardinals in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Legion Field. Then, the North Stars will play host to the Vauxhall Spurs on Sunday, also at 1 p.m. at Legion Field.
And as the final month of the season begins, the time is now for Havre to start piling up victories. With just three weeks left in the regular season, the North Stars are 5-13 in district play and 11-19 overall. So with seeding for the upcoming district tournament on the line, Havre wants badly to hold serve at home.
And after an eight-game conference losing streak, the North Stars used a quick road trip to Great Falls to start their trek back up the standings and they’ll hope to continue that trend this weekend in Havre. On Wednesday, the North Stars crushed the Great Falls Stallions twice in Great Falls, and they’ll hope the run support for their short-handed pitching staff continues against the Cardinals and Spurs. Havre got complete-game wins from Justin Jensen and Gareth Bernard on Wednesday, while the Havre offense scored 32 runs and totaled 29 hits in just 10 innings against the Stallions.
Havre will look for similar numbers against Tri-County. Saturday will mark the first district meeting between the two teams, but Havre did thwart the Cardinals in last month’s North Star Memorial Tournament in Havre. Tri-County has struggled since, especially with just nine players on the active roster, so the North Stars will certainly want to take advantage on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Sunday marks a rematch between the North Stars and Spurs. Just last Sunday, Havre lost a pair of close games in Vauxhall, and will try and return the favor at Legion Field. Havre does have a win over the Spurs this season, a nonconference victory in Havre last month.
And with the district tournament in Great Falls upcoming, and several key home series against the likes of Lethbridge and Medicine Hat still to come, the North Stars will want to keep the momentum they started building earlier this week, and roll with it right through this weekend’s important conference games.
Saturday’s doubleheader between the North Stars and Cardinals starts at 1 p.m. as does Sunday’s twin bill between Havre and Vauxhall. All of the action takes place at Legion Field.
