The Havre heat wave is making golfing conditions tough, but fun. And it’s a far cry from the wet, soggy conditions that have plagued most golf courses throughout the early part of the summer.

At both Prairie Farms Golf Course and Beaver Creek Golf Course, course conditions are excellent with greens in good shape and rolling quickly and true. So now is the time to get out and really test your golf skills, with courses in the area in such good shape.

Speaking of good shape, men’s leagues at Prairie Farms got in their respective rounds last week, despite more tough bouts with strong thunderstorms on Tuesday night. No individual results were reported from golf at Prairie Farms last week, but with time starting to tick away on the second half of the regular season, Spencer’s Hi-Way Bar is out in front on Tuesday night with 85 points, while Walleye Tavern is ahead in the Wednesday night standings with 82.5 points.

Meanwhile, the ladies league at Prairie Farms is heading towards the stretch run of its season. Last Thursday night saw Havre Heating and AC capture high team with 22.5 points. The team was composed of Kelsey Evans Ward, Earan Evans,  Janice Fisher and Kim Evans. Ali Ward sizzled with a 39, including an eagle on No. 5 to earn low gross for the night and Susie LaSalle was low net with a 26.5.

The women of Havre’s golfing community will take to Prairie Farms on Saturday for the annual Havre Women Fighting Breast Cancer Tournament. The event is a three-woman, 9-hole scramble with proceeds going to benefit breast cancer research and awareness.

This past week was also a big week on the Montana Golf Association calendar as both the Women’s State Amateur and the Men’s State Amateur were held. The men played for the first time on the Canyon River Course in Missoula, and Laurel’s Nathan Bailey won his second consecutive state am. The men went low in Missoula, as Baily set the course record with a round of 62 in the third round. No Havre players were listed in the final results, but Malta’s Gordon Webb, the 2008 state am champion finished in fourth place.

The women’s state am was held at Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena with Missoula’s Maggie Crippen winning with an 11-over par final score after three rounds.
