The recent slew of tribal elections continues on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation with a special election scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18.
That election has been set up to replace the seat vacated by Bruce Sunchild Sr. after he was elected as the new chair of the Chippewa Cree Business Committee.
Who ever wins fill finish out Sunchild’s term, which is scheduled to be up for election again in 2012.
Filing to run in the August special election is currently open and will be until 4:30 p. m. Friday.
Potential candidates have to file at the tribal office, with the election office.
So far, three candidates have filed to run for the position: Luanne Belcourt, Stacey Small and Donovan Stump.
Absentee voting for the election will open on Monday, Aug. 15, and end two days later. On Aug. 18 the ballot boxes will open in the old Stone Child College gymnasium.
The process that necessitated this election began earlier this year, when former committee Chair Raymond “Jake” Parker Jr. resigned his position on May 23, two days before pleading guilty to charges of fraud after misspending around $60,000 in tribal funds.
Sunchild, who had been vice chair, then took the interim chair position until being elected as chair full-time in a special election on July 5.
He was sworn in to the role on July 15.
