It was a busy weekend in two locations for high school volleyball on the Hi-Line.
In Rudyard and Gildford, the North Star Showcase was in full swing, while Chinook played host to the two-day Chinook Invitational.
Friday in Rudyard and Gildford, pool play at the North Star Showcase saw plenty of good volleyball. In Rudyard, North Star beat Hays-Lodge Pole, Box Elder defeated Dutton-Brady and North Star, as well as HLP. North Star also fell to Geraldine as did Box Elder while the Knights beat Dutton-Brady. The Rudyard Poll saw Geraldine place first, followed by Box Elder and North Star.
In Gildford Friday, Big Sandy beat the North Star JV, but the Pioneers suffered losses to Rocky Boy, Sunburst and Roy-Winifred. The Morning Stars also lost to Roy-Winifred and Sunburst. Rocky Boy wound up third in the pool and Big Sandy fourth.
Meanwhile, Friday's action in Chinook saw the host Sugarbeeters beat Glasgow, Wolf Point, Cut Bank and Highwood in pool play, while Chester/J-I beat Malta, Valier and Simms. Chinook finished second in Pool B and C/J-I was third in Pool A.
Back at the North Star Showcase on Saturday, Rocky Boy had a strong showing, beating Box Elder and Sunburst to reach the championship match. In the finale, the Morning Stars fell 25-11 and 25-18 to Geraldine to finish second. North Star beat Box Elder in the fifth-place match. In the consolation bracket, Big Sandy won twice to finish in seventh place overall on the weekend.
In the Chinook Invitational on Saturday, the first round of the tournament saw the Hawks defeat Highwood 2-1 setting up an early-season match with Chinook. In the quarterfinals, the Hawks beat the Sugarbeeters 2-1. C/J-I then lost back-to-back matches to Shelby (semifinal) and Fairfield. Chinook bounced back to beat Simms in the loser-out before being knocked out by Glasgow.
Fairfield beat Conrad for third place and Shelby took out Cut Bank in the championship match.
