Havre High junior David Denny tees off during Saturday morning's Havre Invitational golf tournament at Beaver Creek Golf Course.

Wind. To most golfers that’s a sinful word, but the Havre High boys and girls golf teams are used to playing in the wind, and that’s why both teams had a successful 2011 Havre Invitational.

The Blue Ponies hosted the 18-hole Havre Invite Saturday morning at beaver Creek Golf Course, and coming off two straight tournaments on the road, the HHS players were firing on all cylinders.

The Havre High boys finished second out of four teams on Saturday. The Pony varsity scored a 372 and finished just five strokes behind the Swiffcurrent Academy from Sasketchewen. Swiftcurrent captured its fourth staright team title at the HHS Invite. Lewistown was third with a 389 while the Browning boys didn’t field a full scoring team.

Meanwhile, the HHS girls took third in a very competitive field on Saturday. The Ponies scored a 448 which was seven strokes behind second-place Browning. Lewistown captured the girls team title with a 402.

Individually, the Havre boys had five players finish in the Top 10 at BCGC. Ramsey Drew shot 87 to finish third and Sam Lippy shot 88 to finish fourth overall. David Denny continued his fine play with a sixth-place finish at 92. Denny tied sophomore teammate Trey Brown. Spencer Morkrid shot 96 to tie for eighth place.

“The kids played great,” HHS head coach McKinsey Rodriguez said.  “Ramsey Drew and  Sam Lippy  finally broke the barrier of 90 that they have been working on all year. Shooting 87 and 88 respectively they led the team.  It is really great that they are able to be breaking these barriers the week before the divisional golf tournament.”

Havre also got a 105 from senior Simon McCann, while brother Ben McCann shot a carheer-high 109. Austin Christianson shot a 98, Miguel Ley shot 100 and Chance Pitkanen also shot 106 for the Havre boys team.

On the girls side, the Ponies had three players finish in the Top 10 on a day when only four girls broke 100. The young Ponies

were led by Katie Beck’s 102 and a sixth-place finish. Boston Swensen finished with a round of 110 which was good enough for three-way tie for ninth place. Nikki Gabrielson finished right behind Swensen with a 111 which tied her for 10th overall.

Dani Murphy and Taylor McLain tied with 125’s while Megan Cline shot 131, Daniel Friede 135, Samantha French 137 and Julie Kadrmas 165 to round out the HHS scoring.

“Katie Beck lead the team with a 102 for the girls and proves to be consistent in the wind,” Rodriguez said.

Havre was also on the road Friday at the Laurel Invitational. Laurel is a tough, 18-hole course but the Ponies were up to the challenge.  Simon McCann and Pitkanen led the Pony boys each shooting 93. Lippy shot 94, Drew 95 and Denny 104 to round out the scoring in Laurel. The HHS girls were led by Beck with a stellar round of 98, a career best for her, while Gabrielson shot 115. Swensen fired a 117, Murphy shot 128 and Lauren Scofield finished with a 129.

“This week was a marathon for the varsity golf team, but the kids showed they can keep up their stamina,” Rodriguez said. “I am very excited to see what we can do at divisional”

The Blue Pony varsity teams will travel to the East Glacier Lodge Golf Course on Saturday for the 18-hole Central A Divisional Tournament. The top three boys and top three girls teams, along with the top 15 boys and top 15 girls will qualify for the Class A state tourney next week in Hamilton.
