The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will make the long trip to Powell, Wyo., for Saturday’s Northwest College Open. And this weekend, the Lights will get their first look at a tournament format.

Northern, the No. 6 team in the NAIA, is off to a 2-0 start in duals, having just beaten NJCAA powerhouse North Idaho on Saturday night. But the Lights will be up against some quality competition in Powell.

Rival UGF will be in attendance, as will the Northwest College Trappers. Western Wyoming, as well as Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming will also be on the mat. The Cowboys will likely not send their No. 1’s to Powell, but the tournament will certainly be competitive.

Northern will send every available wrestler into Saturday’s meet. Lights’ redshirts can wrestle unattached for the first portion of the season, so all of Northern’s wrestlers will gain valuable experience this weekend.

The Lights will make the long trip back to Powell on Wednesday for a dual against the Trappers. Northern’s next home match is set for Nov. 18 against Southern Oregon.
