It wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination. But the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team showed some serious resolve in a 62-57 win over California's Hope International University in the opening night of the Duck Inn Classic Thursday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse.
Trailing the Royals for much of the contest, the Skylights got a pair of huge 3-pointers from Nikki Tresch, clutch free throws from Laramie Schwenke, and big rebounds by Jordan Bruursema and Kylee Denham, all of which helped Northern improve to 11-1 on the season.
Schwenke led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Tresch added 14 points and Bruursema scored 10 points and grabbed five board. Freshman Taylor Cummings added a key seven points off the bench.
Northern will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday against NCAA Division II Minot State. The Duck Inn Classic continues Friday with games between Carroll and Hope and UGF and Minot.
