The annual Montana East-West Shrine Game is one of the oldest running high school football all-star games in this country. And this coming July, the game will certainly have a Hi-Line flare to it.
Four area athletes we
re recently named to the Shrine Game’s East roster for 2012, including a pair of Havre Blue Ponies and a pair of Chinook Sugarbeeters. Several more area football players were named as alternates.
The East team, which will be coached by Billings Senior’s Mark Sulser will include Havre High standouts Casey Schaub and Joey DeVries. Schaub is a rare pick because he was actually nominated for two different positions. He was selected to the official roster as an inside linebacker, a position he’s earned Class A All-State honors at for two straight seasons. But he was also named to the East as an alternate at fullback. This past season, Schaub rushed for nearly 1,000 yards as part of a dynamic Havre High offense.
Joining Schaub on the East squad will be fellow Blue Pony senior Joey DeVries. The two-time all-state offensive lineman will play center for the East all stars in this summer’s game.
For the second straight season, Chinook will have two players competing in the Shrine Game. Benjamin Stroh, a three-time Class C All-State selection was named an inside linebacker for the East team, while Chinook senior Jorrell Jones will play in the game on the offensive line. Together, Stroh and Jones were part of the 2010 Class C state championship team, and they helped lead the Beeters to an undefeated regular season, a Northern C championship and a trip to the Class C semifinals this past fall.
Harlem’s Branden Hammond was named an alternate to the East team at defensive end, while Chester-J-I’s Adam Fitzpatrick was selected as an alternate at defensive tackle.
The 66th Annual East-West Shrine Game will be played July 21 at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.
