The bit of winter the area experienced Tuesday didn’t turn out to be much, although temperatures dropped over night, but forecasters are saying more normal weather might be on the way by the end of the weekend.
The National Weather Service put out an alert early this morning saying a cold front is expected to move south across the Canadian border Sunday night, bringing widespread snow showers and much colder temperatures.
A snap of cold weather did come through the area Tuesday, bringing light snow starting in the late morning, ending by mid-afternoon in Havre, and leaving just a trace of accumulation.
The temperatures dropped rapidly, from a high of 45 to a low for Wednesday of 18 and continuing to fall through the early morning, with the final low recorded at 5 degrees.
Various forcasting entities predict the weather to tick back up slightly in temperature through Sunday, with various highs and lows predicted, but all predict the temperatures to drop that night and a chance of snow to come to the area through next week.
The Weather Service forecast matches its alert, with a forecast calling for highs in the teens and lows in the single digits Sunday night through Tuesday, with a slight chance of snow showers forecast for Havre through that period.
The alert lists a chance of a little more snow falling through parts of Montana, saying 2 inches to 4 inches of snow accumulation is possible in the lower elevations with up to 6 inches to 10 inches in higher elevations.
The Weather Channel forecast is a little more stingy in its temperature predictions, listing a high of 12 for Monday and 17 for Tuesday and Wednesday before moving into the 20s in its forecast, with a low of 2 degrees predicted Monday night and similar lows for Tuesday through Thursday before predicting a balmy 8 degrees for the low Friday.
The Weather Channel lists a 10 percent chance for rain Sunday, then a 20 percent chance for snow Monday through Wednesday and a 60 percent chance of snow Thursday. The chance of snow Friday drops back to 10 percent in the Weather Channel forecast.
AccuWeather.com is more extreme with its predictions of frigid weather. That weather service has forecast lows of 3 degrees Sunday, 6 below zero Monday and 5 below zero Tuesday, with 2 degrees the forecast low for Wednesday and the prediction that lows again will drop below zero Thursday and Friday.
AccuWeather also predicts a chance of snow for Wednesday and snow along with the cold temperatures for Thursday, with a forecast for cold and sunny weather for Friday.
