One week and a few games is all that stands between area high school girls basketball teams and the start of the postseason. And that’s what made this past week such an important to many teams across the Hi-Line.
The action started back on Tu
esday when the Chester/J-I Hawks went to Rudyard and took care of the North Star Knights, 54-19. The Hawks’ defense absolutely shut down the Knights, holding them to just 10 points in the first half and nine in the second.
Nikole Wolf scored 12 points and Kate Graff added nine for C/J-I. Lisa Carlon scored seven for North Star while Haylee Anderson added six.
Thursday night saw the Big Sandy Pioneers grab the first of two big wins over the weekend. In Rocky Boy, Big Sandy edged the host Morning Stars 58-56. Rocky Boy looked like it was on its way to a win, leading 47-36 going into the fourth quarter. But the Pioneers stormed back, outscoring the Morning Stars 22-9 in the final eight minutes.
Mateila Cline scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Pioneers. Molly Herron added 15 as well. Rocky Boy got 14 points by Sabrina Laforge and another 11 by Leigha Onco in the heartbreaking loss.
The Pioneers (3-3, 10-4) found themselves in another nail biter on on Friday night, only this time, they were facing the 9C rival Chinook Sugarbeeters in Chinook. And this time, it was Big Sandy’s opponent which made the late charge. The Beeters trailed 33-20 at the end of the third quarter, but then went on a 17-7 run in the fourth. However, Big Sandy had just enough in the tank, making some big free throws down the stretch to hold Chinook off.
Cline was held to just eight points, but Katie Owen stepped up and scored nine for the Pioneers. Shayna Gilead and Brooke Leader each scored seven. Chinook got 14 points from Taryn Norby, while Kayla Hanson scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The big upset of the weekend came Friday night as the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds shocked the high-powered Winifred-Roy Red Raiders in Hays. The T-Birds made a late 15-7 run in the fourth quarter and won 46-43.
Shakayla Whitecow scored 16 points and Kristie Runsabove added 13 for the 9C T-Birds, who knocked off one of the top teams in the Northern C.
North Star also used Friday night to rebound. The Knights were at home again, and they took care of Sunburst, 46-35. Taylor Warren poured in a game-high 11 points for the Knights, while Lisa Carlon scored 10.
The top two teams on the Hi-Line weren’t tested at all Friday.
The No. 3 Box Elder Bears were at home, and they crushed Heart Butte 75-23. Box Elder only needed a 25-6 run in the first quarter to make the game a blowout. Box Elder’s Crystal Stamper led all scorers with 22 points.
C/J-I had no trouble with 10C foe Power on Friday. The No. 7 Hawks moved to 15-1 on the season with a 60-32 road win. C/J-I had 11 different players score, with Nikole Wolfe leading the way with 11 points.
While HLP might have been riding high from its victory on Friday night, the T-Birds were no match for Box Elder, even at home. The Bears (16-0, 8-0) stormed into Hays and took down the T-Birds 63-45 on Saturday night.
Aricka Wolf Chief drained a game-high 24 points to lead the unbeaten Bears, while Brandi Buffalo chipped in with 12 and Crystal Stamper added 14. HLP (5-12, 1-6) got 20 points from Shakayla Whitecow in the loss.
Other 9C teams had just as much trouble on Saturday.
In nonconference action, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were held to just 28 points in a 40-28 loss at Hinsdale. Taryn Norby was the only Chinook(5-3, 11-5) player to reach double figures with 13 points.
And the North Stars Knights were beaten Saturday at Winifred-Roy, 50-37. The Knights led by one point at halftime, but the Raiders outscored them 34-10 the rest of the way.
Lisa Carlon and Tylynn Rettig each scored eight points to lead the Knights (1-6, 6-10).
In Class B action Saturday night, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars were on the road to take on the No.1-ranked Fairfield Eagles, and the Morning Stars were toppled, 73-26. In the loss, Rocky Boy got six points apiece from Jai-Lynn Day Child, Sabrina Laforge and Tennae Singer.
Things didn’t go any better for Harlem, which was soundly beaten by 2B rival Glasgow, 47-24 in Glasgow. Tesche Ereaux scored 13 points in the loss to the Scottie.
This coming week marks the end of the regular season for all area Class B and Class teams.
