The Montana State University-Northern wreslting team can finally say finally. With no forfeits, no injury defaults and everyone in the lineup going head-to-head, the Lights finally beat the University of Great Falls on the wrestling mat. The No. 9 Lights rode a ridal wave of momentum, with four straight wins to eventually edge the Argos 21-18 Thursday night in Havre.
It was senior night at Northern, but a group of MSU-N youngesters pushed the Lights to victory. Northern trailed the fourth-ranked Argos 11-3 after the 149-pound match with only MSU-N senior Anthony Weerheim in the win column. But MSU_N redshirt freshman Mickey Cheff changed everything when he pinned UGF's Michael Hader late in the third period. That was followed by a pin by Ethan Hinebauch, a 2-0 win by Jared miller and an 11-9 decision by Kody Reed. Though the Lights lost the final two matches of the dual, the four straight wins was enough to get Northern over the hump.
The win over UGF was Northern's first outright since December of 2006. The two squads tied 24-24 in November of 2010 in Havre.
Next up for both teams is next weekend's Western Regional in Ashland, Ore.
